University students and youth mobilizers have taken the lead in promoting cultural heritage through active preparations for Kadodi Karnival 2026, scheduled for May 2 at UMA Show ground in Kampala. The gathering, attended by students from different institutions, focused on mobilizing fellow youths to participate in the annual carnival that celebrates the traditions of the Bagisu community. Organizers described the event as more than entertainment, saying it is a platform for preserving identity, strengthening unity, and reconnecting young people to their roots. Participants displayed promotional posters and called upon students to embrace cultural events that promote African values and traditions. They noted that many young people are increasingly losing touch with their heritage due to modernization and foreign cultural influence. According to the o...

RISKY EXCAVATION NEAR CHURCH

Image
Workers dig deep unsupported  trenches close to an        active church building. Concerns are mounting over safety practices at a construction site where deep foundation trenches are being dug just meters away from an existing church structure. The ongoing excavation, intended for expansion works, has exposed workers to potential hazards due to the apparent lack of protective reinforcements and safety barriers. At the site, several laborers are seen working inside steep, open pits without visible protective gears such as helmets or safety harnesses. The loose red soil and depth of the trenches increase the risk of cave-ins, especially if weather conditions change or the ground becomes unstable. Observers have also raised alarm over the proximity of the excavation to the standing church building, noting that inadequate support could compromise the structure’s stability. wooden planks and minimal scaffolding appear to be the only safeguards in place,...

POVERTY PUSHES FAMILIES INTO UNSAFE SETTLEMENTS

Image
Temporary shelters built with timber, and iron sheets reflect the growing housing crisis in urban areas. The growing cost of living in urban areas is forcing more families to settle in unsafe and overcrowded informal settlements. Many residents now live in temporary structures made of wood, iron sheets, and plastic covers due to the high cost of rent and unemployment. These settlements, often found near wetlands and undeveloped land, lack proper sanitation, clean water, and secure housing. Children and the elderly are the most affected, as they face health risks from poor drainage, flooding, and exposure to harsh weather conditions. Residents say they work hard in casual jobs such as vending, construction, and domestic work, but their income is too little to support decent housing. Some families have lived in these conditions for years, hoping for government intervention. Local leaders and housing activists are urging authorities to invest in affordable housing projects an...

WOMEN RISING

Image
Kadondi Gracious’ Guild Victory Signals a Shift at Makerere University. The recent victory of Kadondi Gracious as Guild President at Makerere University marks more than a personal achievement,it highlights the growing presence and influence of women in student politics. Her win reflects a broader shift where young women are stepping forward to lead, challenge norms, and redefine leadership spaces traditionally dominated by men. Across campuses and communities, women in politics are increasingly visible, vocal, and impactful. They bring fresh perspectives to governance, often emphasizing inclusivity, social welfare, and collaboration. Kadondi’s success serves as inspiration to many young women who may have previously doubted their place in leadership. However, the journey is not without challenges. Women in politics frequently face gender bias, higher scrutiny, and limited support structures. Despite this, victories like Kadondi’s demonstrate resilience and determination, signalin...

OUTDOOR MEDIA WORKSHOP

Image
Live demonstration on storytelling techniques A group of young aspiring journalists gathered for an outdoor training session focused on practical storytelling and lede writing skills, highlighting a shift toward more flexible and accessible learning environments. Held under a temporary tent, the workshop created an informal yet engaging space where participants interacted closely with the facilitator. The trainer emphasized real world application, encouraging students to think critically about how they structure stories and capture readers’ attention from the first sentence. Unlike traditional classroom settings, the open-air environment allowed for a more relaxed exchange of ideas, with learners asking questions and sharing perspectives. A visual presentation supported the session, reinforcing key concepts in modern journalism, including writing for digital audiences. Participants described the experience as both interactive and inspiring, noting that "the ha...

A healthy body= great grades

Student's evening walk . A group of students from kireka high school  participating in an evening walk on Sunday. Physical exercises are very important because they help in keeping our bodies strong and healthy as explained below; Regular exercise strengthens the body, builds muscles and bones, and keeps the heart healthy. It also helps prevent illnesses like obesity and lifestyle diseases hence living longer. It also increases blood flow to the brain, which improves concentration, memory, and learning ability. Students who are physically active often find it easier to focus in class and perform better in exams. Therefore I encourage all students out their to actively participate in physical exercises. Sometimes school life can be stressful so these exercises help in releasing tension and boosts the mood by releasing “feel-good” chemicals in the brain, making students feel more relaxed and positive. Group activities like football, netball, o...

CLAY STOVE PRODUCTION

Image
A local artisan arranges rows of clay stoves. In kireka Nambole, local artisans are preserving traditional craftsmanship by producing clay stoves, commonly known as "sigili", which are widely used for cooking in many Ugandan households. One artisan was observed carefully mixing and shaping clay, part of a detailed process that results in durable, energy-efficient stoves. The compound, filled with neatly arranged rows of drying sigilis, reflects both skill and steady demand for the product. These clay stoves are valued for their affordability and ability to conserve charcoal, making them a practical option for many low-income families. Despite the importance of this trade, artisans face several challenges, including limited access to modern tools, fluctuating weather conditions that affect drying, and minimal financial support. Much of the work remains manual, requiring significant time and physical effort. Even so, the continued production of these clay stoves highlights th...

FASHION AND STYLE

Image
Fashion usually refers to current trends and what’s popular at a given time for example nowadays youths like oversized trousers and t.shirts, and buggy hoodies. Style, on the other hand, is personal, it’s how you choose to wear those trends or ignore them entirely to reflect who you are.  One can just choose to be simple and casual but put together.                 Some key elements of good style . Fit: Clothes that fit well instantly elevate your look. Color coordination: Knowing what colors work together (and for your skin tone) makes a big difference. Simplicity vs. statement: A balanced outfit often mixes basics with one standout piece.
